On the second day of the European Billiards Championships in Brandenburg/Germany the event was officially opened. At a ceremony with numerous guests and various show acts, the President of the European Billiards Association CEB, Mr. Wolfgang Rittmann, spoke the awaited words and opened this major sporting event just outside Berlin. 

The Men’s 3-cushion competition on the match tables was the highlight of the day. In the round of the last 32 players the 16 seeded joined the tournament, some of them soon found themselves back in the audience. One of them was title holder Marco Zanetti (Italy) who lost in the round of the last 16 to Adnan Yüksel from Turkey. Frédéric Caudron (Belgium) lost in the same round to Nikos Polychronopoulos while German hope Christian Rudolph reached at least the quarterfinals before he fell to Dutch world class player Dick Jaspers. Along with Yüksel and Jaspers the spectators will see Torbjörn Blomdahl (Sweden) and Eddy Merckx from Belgium in tomorrow’s semi-finals.

In the juniors 3-cushion tournament the final will take place between Matthieu Franck (France), who beat his fellow countryman Gwendal Marechal by 30:11-points, and Berkay Karakurt from Turkey who won a 30:28 thriller against Joao Ferreira of Portugal.The first two medals for the host nation Germany has been fixed in the under 17-event in the discipline “Libre”. Both Simon Blondeel and Michael Ramge made it to the semis and will face Bryan Ellen (Belgium) and Pierre Martory from France on Sunday. 

Also in the Club Team Event for the under 19 players, the German team was very successful. The DBC Bochum is on its way to the semifinals as well as the Dutch Team from the Billard-Club Osselien. The medal decisions will also take place on Sunday.

Late Saturday evening the Men’s One-Cushion-Tournament started with the group stages. An overall of 24 players are divided into 8 groups. Only the winner of each group will make it to the single elimination round which is the quarterfinal.
