CAIRO - The Union Mondiale de Billard, the UMB, has elected a new president and a new board member during the General Assembly in Caïro on Saturday. The Egyptian Farouk Barki was elected with a huge majority over the other candidate, Torsten Danielsson from Switzerland. The General Assembly, the biannual congress, this year in the Mena House Hotel in Caïro, had to appoint a new president for the next two years after the forced departure of the Belgian Jean Claude Dupont at the European championship in Brandenburg, last year.At the Congress in Cairo, 260 votes were cast for the election of the president. Farouk Barki received 240 votes, Torsten Danielsson 15, five votes were blank. The congress was attended by eighteen federations and the four confederations. The absent federations voted through their confederation.
Torsten Danielsson left the board after his defeat in the election. The born Dane was elected in 2014, in Terneuzen, the Netherlands, during the previous General Assembly, less than two years ago. In a speech at the Congress in Caïro, he asked the federations not to vote for the two board members Farouk Barki and Fernando Requena because of suspicions on their previous management.
The Dane announced in publications in recent weeks that he had filed charges against the former UMB Board at the CAS, the Court of Arbitration for Sport in Lausanne with a complaint about missing money and mismanagement. TAS, however, appeared to know nothing about these charges two days before the congres, and they had never heard the name of Danielsson. No procedure was currently handled that involved billiards or the UMB.
The UMB congress elected not only Farouk Barki and Fernando Requena, but also the Korean Steve Lee as a new member. The UMB Committee includes also the four confederation presidents. Santos Chocron from Holland was already appointed in Terneuzen as UMB Office Manager.
On Thursday, before the congress, the Egyptian control commission, which did the financial investigation, granted discharge to the board. The statement of account provided for the years 2014/2015, included the amount totally recovered from the previous president.
