VARDE BK TAKES HOME THE COUPE D'EUROPE 3-CUSHION 2024
The Danish team of Varde are the new champions of the Coupe d'Europe 3-Cushion for the season 2024.
Today in the FC Porto Academy the semifinals and the final were played.
Four teams survided so far: Varde BK from Denmark, the home team and defending champions of FC Porto, the French team of BC Andernos and the Dutch team of Cue&Darts/Xtreme.
In the semifinals Varde defeated the Dutch champions of Cue&Darts and soon after it was FC Porto to won the Andernos team. Both matches were clear victories by 8-0 even if the score alone does not give a clear idea of the high level of the games and the tension in the venue. In the semifinals Varde played a team average of 1,565, FC Porto performed a 1,948.
The final match was a little lower in averages but more impredictable. The first to finish was Dion Nelin for Varde against Rui Manuel Costa for FC Porto (40-16 in 19). Then Dick Jaspers (FC Porto) equalized the match points with a 40-21 in 20 against Eddy Merckx (Varde). Jean Paul De Bruijn for Varde and Torbjorn Blomdahl for FC Porto had a though and exciting match decided only in the last innings; De Bruijn won by 40-38 in 28. With a 4-2 provisional score all had to be decided in the last match between Allan Schroder (Varde) and Jose Miguel Soares (FC Porto); that was the last one to finish. Schroder had a big advantage in the first part of the match but Soares attempted a come back that was only partially succedeed. The joy of the Danes exploded at the 35th inning when Schroder scored the 40th point and Soares stayed at 37.
Gold medals for Varde BK (Merckx, De Bruijn, Nelin, Schroder, Kristiansen, Andersen)
Silver for FC Porto (Jaspers, Blomdahl, Costa, Soares).
Bronze for BC Andernos (Zanetti, Forthomme, Marechal, Barbeillon) and Cues&Darts/Xtreme (Legazpi, Soumagne, Wilkowski, De Kok, Van Peer).
